Answers:
You lung are "powered" by muscles!. The main respiratory muscle is the diaphragm!. The diaphragm is the big curved muscle between the chest and belly!. It moves up and down to pull air in when it flexes and to push air out when it relaxes!. The lung are attached, so to speak, to the chest wall and when the diaphragm pulls the lungs down, they expand or get larger!. This will create a negative pressure in the lungs drawing air in through the mouth and nose!. The only real thing the lungs do on there own is to transfer oxygen back and forth with the blood stream!.

If you tense up and tense your diaphragm muscle, there will be little or no air moving in and out of your lungs!. So just looking at air movement, yes they will stop working while the muscles are tense!.

That said, as long as there is oxygen in the lungs, they will continue to transfer it in to the blood stream and pull out carbon dioxide!.

Side note, when I do martial arts, I tend to hold my breath while doing techniques!. I am contently being told to breathe while doing them!. I need to work on that, its not good to tense while exerting energy like that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
