Can a person honestly and truthfully be allergic to cigarette smoke?!
Question:
Can a person honestly and truthfully be allergic to cigarette smoke?
I work for a hotel and have alot of guests state that they need a non-smoking room due to being allergic to cigarette smoke. I was just curious if this is truly an allergie or are they blowing smoke themselves.
Answers:
Leaving aside the allergy question -- some people are very *sensitive* to tobacco, and just the smell can make them upset, and they can't sleep.
I've been in some hotel rooms that have *reeked* of smoke, and even though I'm not particularly sensitive, I would still prefer a fresh-smelling room. I mean, really, I'm paying through the nose -- I expect a clean place to sleep.
Smokers are used to it, though, and many really can't smell the difference.
Oh, and sometimes the smell creeps up on you -- you think it's OK at first, but then it seems to get stronger and stronger. OTOH, I get used to it after awhile.
If you don't have a non-smoking room available, it's best to tell the "allergic" people about other hotels in the area and be polite about it. Often, the guys who trumpet their allegies can be a real PITA about things, so don't try to fool them. It'll be more hassle than it's worth.
