Answers:
Its basically a response to what's going on in your body, the infection and your brain tells your body its the mucous membranes in your throat and knows to produce more mucous as to help get that infection expelled in the form of coughing, sneezing and things like that!. Maybe you'll find its just a runny nose!. But the mucous is there to help catch those bacteria and expel them and to get them out of your system!. Also you'll find that mucous production increases when you have a sore throat!. It also helps heal the lining of your throat and such problems!.

So to recap, its a defense mechanism (immune response for the medically erudite) that your brain tells your body to produce to help expel certain products inside your lungs or inside your throat so you can get rid of them faster!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Scuba Jo,
Mucus is mainly made up of white blood cells which contain antibodies to help fight infection!. When you are ill, extra white blood cells travel to the point of infection, in this case, your nose!. Mucus is produced by submucosal cells as well as goblet cells in the respiratory system!. It consists of mucin, a highly glycolsilated peptide!. Upon stimulation, MARPKs (myrastine-alanine rich protein kinases) signal the binding of mucin filled vesicles to the plasma membrane!. The fusion of the vesicles causes the release of the mucin, which as it exchanges Ca2+ for Na+ expands up to 600 fold!. The result is a viscoelastic product of interwoven molecules called mucus!.
