Shrinking Brain???!

Question:

Shrinking Brain???

My mom has epilepsy and while at her neurology appointment the doctor said that her brain is shrinking. What does that mean? Will it change how she thinks or her day to day life? Does it mean she's sick?

Answers:

I'm not a doctor, but the brain can shrink during a person's lifetime, which is probably the result of a loss of gray matter (the cells that clean up after the neurons), though your neurologist might be able to tell you. Her function will be affected based on what areas are shrinking.

She would only be considered "sick" if the function impairment is enough to disrupt her life, as I'm sure the seizures have. Depends on what you consider "sick" to be.

I wish you the best... take care.
