Answers:

I don't know about benzaclin but it's going to take the Retin A awhile to work, and it's going to get worse before it gets better, so hang in there.

Basically, Retin A speeds up the skin sloughing process and in the process brings about more pimples. Common side effects are redness, peeling, dry skin, burning etc. You are probably going to see these side effects, along with increased pimples, for about six weeks or so, until you skin gets used to the medicine and the pimples that are already in your skin (they're there, you just can't see most of them yet) are brought to the top layer and run their course.

If it's burning, skip it for a day and then go back to it later. I found that when using it I could only use it and a very sensitive skin lotion, such as Eucerin, anything else was too harsh. If it continues burning, you may want to ask your doctor about lowering the dosage of the Retin A or stopping the other drug while you're using the Retin A.

Once the "underground" pimples are gone, however, the Retin A will help to keep new ones from forming. A nice side effect (depending on your age :), is that it also helps diminish wrinkles.

Edited to add: I forgot to tell you how I applied it...just a very light film on my face right before bed (really a pea-sized amount is enough) being careful to stay away from the eye area. Once, I got it too close to the corners of my eyes and woke the next day with red, puffy, "burnt" skin that lasted for a few days before peeling. Ouch - that hurt!

Good luck!
