Feel tired all the time? Please Help.?!

Question: Feel tired all the time? Please Help.?
I'm 20 years old and have been tired all the time since like high school. I started drinking a lot of coffee around that time but I'm not sure if it's related. I still have moderate acne that won't go away since then and have pretty dark circles under my eyes. I usually get 8 or 9 hours of sleep during school days and take an hour and a half nap in the middle of the day. I take vitamin d and a multivitamin every day and eat okay and exercise. After I exercise I feel like I have an unlimited amount of energy for about 3 or 4 hours. I also get stressed very easily and have undiagnosed anxiety problems. My symptoms seem to fit with low blood sugar, but under-active thyroid fits better. I don't think it is depression. Can you give me some advice on what it could be?

Answers:

From what you are telling me there's no way to diagnose any of those diseases you mentioned. In order to determine that you have Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) there are certain things I would need to see on a physical examination (hypoactivity, obesity, slow reponses, etc) as well as some blood tests that need to be done. If you were to have hypoglycemia episodes you would be feeling really tired, sweating with chills even losing conscience episodically instead of all the time. So, I doubt that this is your situation.

However, the advice I could give you is for you to try to be as active as possible. Sometimes your brain gets used to too much rest. Since you sleep 8-9 hours every night plus 1 1/2 hour nap your brain can get used to work in slow motion. Even though it is really nice to rest well I also think that you need to be more active. Try to change your daily activities a little bit and start doing things differently. Include some regular exercising as well. If none of this works for you and you really feel tired then go see a doctor and explain your symptoms.

Hope this helps.

I'm a doctor.
