Physical Therapy question?!

Question:

Physical Therapy question?

What are the APTA guidelines when recommending exercise as part of a comprehensive treatment to a patient with obesity and is a smoker?

i.e. do we have to take bp, heart rate, specific parameters?

I'm looking for research or supporting info via websites. I'm a PT student, interning at a hospital and this was brought up the other day. I just got done running a few miles. It's not me.

Answers:

I wouldn't believe that the APTA would be the appropriate source of information as this is a medical question. HOWEVER, I beleive the APTA would endorse any guidelines promoted by the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, or Cardiologists's Association.

To answer your question more specifically, you need to monitor tests and vitals as appropriate to your recommended treatment. For instance, if you are focusing on body mechanics and posture education, I would not necessarily say these vitals need to be taken regularly. However, if your treatment is to include any progressive resistive exercise or any cadiovascular exercise, it would certainly be appropriate to take the very vital signs you mentioned.

I would go to the AHA, etc. for more specific guidelines.
