I get palpitations every now and then but I've been having them all week la!

Question: I get palpitations every now and then but I've been having them all week lately could there be anything wrong?
They have never lasted this long before, I probably only had them about 4 times a year for a few seconds at a time, but at the beginning of this week I noticed I had palpitations for about 30 minuets at a time, and they keep on coming back. My brother suffers the same and the doctor told him they were nothing to worry about, even though our family have a history of heart problems on both sides, do you think I have something to worry about?

In general I would say not... I have similar symptoms due to a condition called Cardio venticular (some say Cardio myopathy) and heart trouble runs in my family I dont know your age but I like you only have the palpitations the odd time but sometimes I get a period of around a week where I get loads, for me this is normally due to a few things,,, either when I have worked too many hours in the weeks before or been under extra stess, sometimes its after a virus like a flu when by body is run down, if you are a smoker or drink caffine this can also be the key, but if you are worried or have any pain assosciated in the chest arm or neck or mouth you deffinately need to get this checked. a simple ECG echo cardio-gram can spot any problems before its too late. The fact is we get worried when we have more of them than normal which then adds anxiety into the picture. Hope this helps.

Best thing to do is visit your local cardiologist. Frequent palpitations can often be a sign of something underlying... or not. Such as something minor like mitral valve prolapse (which is a harmless). Or other factors like high blood pressure, stress, an intolerance to certain foods, caffeine / sugar, etc. can often induce palpitations. Just make an appointment in your free time to see your local heart doc. You mention heart problems run in both sides of your family, so chances are high that you have one too. Just have to be realistic here.
