Do I have sleep apnea?!

Question:

Do I have sleep apnea?

I think my dad has had it ever since he was a kid and in very good physical condition. My dad said when he was a kid, he wouldn't breathe for a few seconds and then take a very deep breath and I do that too. Alot of people on my dad's side of the family have it. I've heard if you can't remember your dreams, you might have this. And I rarely remember my dreams. I don't snore though. I'm not overweight AT ALL. I'm 16 and physically fit.

Answers:

First, just b/c you can't remember your dreams does not mean that you have sleep apnea. You will remember your dreams depending on when you wake up from your REM cycle. If you wake up in the middle then your dreams will be very vivid, but the further you get out of REM the less you will remember even to the point where you do not think you dream. So just b/c you don't remember your dreams does not mean that you don't dream. Plus, snoring is the most noticed symptom of sleep apnea. But if you are seriously worried I would go see a sleep physician and discuss your concerns with him. Knowledge is power.
