About 1 in 20 patients attending an ENT / audiology clinic for problems vvith their ears or hearing turn out to have normal results on standard hearing tests and no identifiable ear problem. Most of these patients complain particularly of difficulties understanding speech in noisy surroundings. This puzzling combination of symptoms and results is termed OAD - Obscure Auditory Dysfunction.
People are often reassured on learning how many other people share the same problem.
Two thirds of people vvith OAD complain of problems understanding speech when background noise exists.
One third complain of problems understanding speech particularly in the presence of other speech or in group conversations.
One quarter also consider theIr heanng in one ear to be worse than in the other.
Most people report some dIfficulty In these situations.
People wIth OAD feel that they expenence these difficulties more than others. The descriptions that people with OAD give of their problems differ little from the descriptions given by people with the types of ordinary hearing Impairment that do show up on standard tests.
Specialised testing is therefore needed to find the basis for the particular problems of each OAD patient.
