Question: Are condoms effective for STD prevention?

a close friend told me she might have an STD of unknown origin, how effective would using a condom be against me getting this unknown STD? anything i should avoid in particular? im probably going for it either way lol, hopefully its just a rumor

NO they are not 100 percent effective at preventing all stds. Infections like herpes and genital warts can affect areas of the genitals besides where the condom protects. If your partner has a break out of those infections you still have a chance of contracting it even if you use condoms. If your partner has any of those infections avoid having intercourse and oral sex while they have any signs of a break out.
You may want to ask this friend to get tested to find out if she for sure has and if she does have an std what she has.

Condoms can help protect against STDs, however, they are not 100%. I work for Identigene and we test for chlamydia and gonorrhea which are the two most common STDs out there.

STDs can cause other health issues, taking care of your sexual health is important. If you do decide to have sex with someone that could be infected please make sure you get yourself tested. Protect yourself not just for you, but for future partners as well.

Some STDs cannot be avoided simply by using a condom, including HPV (warts), herpes, and molluscum contagiosum (a persistent viral infection that is hard to get rid of).

With those diseases, all that is needed is skin-on-skin contact anywhere in the "boxer area" of the body--front or back, waist to thighs.

Just know the facts before you go.

Condoms are effective against most STD's. Use one always, you sound like a kid, there's no need to risk pregnancy (which is far worse than any STD!). You should definitely ask her if she has an STD, don't feel uncomfortable, everyone does it. Tell her you heard a rumor and you are nervous about it. Ask her if she got checked recently.

Condoms are very effective, but never 100%. Only 99.9 percent or something. I have had sex with a couple girls that I found afterward had STDs. I never received an STD from them.

Yes, & demand that new relationships go get checked for STD and show you the paperwork. It only takes once to catch something bad for life.

A condom would be sufficient when combined with the ability to identify an obvious STD on your partner.

They're not 100% but since you're doing it anyway why would you ask? . . . . . . idiot

There is only one way to find out if she has a STD or not.
