BP measures the pressure inside your arteries. The first number is the systolic which is the maximum pressure as the heart pushes the blood into the arteries. The second number is the diastolic which is the minimum pressure as the heart relaxes between beats. BP will vary at different times of the day and depending where you measure the pressure. Pressure is usually measured in the upper arm at a point that is level with the heart. A pressure that is too high (either number) will damage the veins and arteries as well as risk a rupture of a vessel. If this occurs in the brain or heart, then a stroke or heart attack happens.

Blood pressure measures how forcefully blood travels through your arteries. There are two numbers that make up blood pressure. The top number if called systolic blood pressure and it measure how fast your blood is traveling through the arteries. The bottom number is called diastolic pressure and it measure how hard the blood is pressing against the outer walls of your arteries.

Blood pressure is a measurement of the force applied to the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. The pressure is determined by the force and amount of blood pumped, and the size and flexibility of the arteries.
