I am considering endoscopic fundoplication...has anyone had this procedure done?!

Question:

I am considering endoscopic fundoplication...has anyone had this procedure done?

Unfortunately, several doctors swear by it and others strongly recommend against it. No middle ground, and frankly neither the docs arguing for or against it seem to have any real reason for their strong positions.

Also, the hospitals can't seem to tell me how much it is going to cost, even if I private pay for it (meaning dont use insurance just pay by check or credit card).

Any help you may have or any experience you can share would be helpful.

Thank you.

Answers:

I would advise you to use extreme caution if you are considering this procedure. My best friend had it done about 18 months ago and just left the hospital yesterday from having a feeding tube put in her stomach. She has lost 70 pounds, she now weighs 83, and looks like a tooth-pick with skin hanging off of her. She vomits constantly, cannot eat anything, her hair is falling out, she has had another surgery by a different physician to repair the original fundiplication, has panic attacks due to her health and cannot stand to go out in public because of her physical appearance. If you use the second link below, there has been a study in which 79 of 243 patients involved in the study had died, primarily from heart problems. I will assume that this is sometimes successful or doctors wouldn't still be doing it, but for us, it has been an ongoing nightmare. Good luck!!
