Why do we understand that a healthy military requires good preventative health c!

Question:

Why do we understand that a healthy military requires good preventative health care?

but can't figure out that a healthy population is also in the national interest from the standpoint of haveing stronger more productive workers, and saving billions of the national treasury. Preventable conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, emphysema, heart conditions, obesity etc. could all be controlled by having a national health plan. It's not communism when US Congressmen and the US military gets it. It just makes good economic sense for everyone to get it. their is a national epidemic of obese kids with Diabetes which will require a lifetime of treatment when it coild have been prevented.

Answers:

I don't think a national health plan is a good idea. You only have to look at the mess Medicare and Medicaid has made to see that.

Last year my state went ~4 mo without paying it's Medicaid bills, our hospital had major problems with that since 30% of our patients are on Medicaid, we had a hiring freeze, tryed to reduce spending, etc. It was a nightmare. What do you do when the governement refuses to pay it's bill? You can't refer it to a collection agency.

I have also had to deal with Medicaid when they didn't want to approve something. The doctor considered a particular test medically necessary for 1 patient. It took 2 mo. going back and forth between the doctor, pharmacy, and Medicare before we could get this patient's test approved. If waiting 2 mo. for a diagnostic test isn't poor health care I don't know what is.
