My father who is 84 has kidney disease has been advised to start dialysis?!
Question:
My father who is 84 has kidney disease has been advised to start dialysis?
If he chooses not go start dialysis, what is his general prognosis? How long will he live and how will he likely die?
Answers:
My sister has a kidney disease as well called Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis or FSGS. Now she has had a kidney transplant, but before that became an option she had been on dialysis for a few weeks. Really the prognosis depends on the type of kidney disease he has, and how advanced it is. Some people can live for an amazing amount of time past what the doctors give them, and some go much faster. There are too many variable factors for me to give you a more accurate time frame. Your father should discuss these options with his doctor if he is concerned. Best of luck!
