Can I get HERPES this way?!

Question: Can I get HERPES this way?
My sister is moving back in with us tonight and while we were hanging out today she told me that she and her boyfriend both have herpes! I'm freaking out now and won't even use our toilet without washing the seat off first with soap. Am I overreacting? Or could I possibly contract Herpes through the toilet seat, bath tub, towels, bath poufs etc. ? What are some ways to protect myself?

Answers:

No, you can't get it that way. See here for explanation: http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/herpes_p…

Think about it. Herpes appears in basically only two places--genitals and mouth. Why? Because that's the only place where it can live. It needs that very specific environment. If it goes elsewhere, it dies. It can't live on any surface--it can't even live on your arm! It can only live in the moist, very warm and blood-rich mouth and genitals. So it definitely can't live on towels, or the toilet, the tub, or bath poufs. If they have it on their mouth, though, you may get it by kissing them. But they can only transmit it to anyone during very short periods of time. Most of the time, they're not even contagious. They're only contagious when they have outbreaks, and a few days before that. And they probably don't have outbreaks that often. And the longer they have the disease, the fewer outbreaks they'll likely have.

You can only catch herpes if someone who has it has an outbreak (or the few days before an outbreak) with direct contact with the sores.
So, if you and your sister aren't so close that you kiss on the mouth on a regular basis, and you don't do anything you shouldn't with her boyfriend, you are completely safe. The virus dies upon exposure to air -- so you can't get it from a toilet seat, bath tub, or anything like that. Although I'm not sure why you'd share a shower pouf...
If your sister is looking for something to help during her outbreaks, my best friends swears by this stuff: http://bit.ly/hvTQph
It looks kind of cheesy, but she took a chance and she's never gone back.
