Answers:

In defense of your doctor, most people go to their doctor because they believe a pill will fix everything. Most of the time, with lifestyle, diet or exercise changes, you can fix most problems that occur but it is easier to ask for a pill and expect miracles. You do not state what you are being treated for so it would be hard to give any specific instruction to you on this. If you took the pills exactly as directed, they did not help, then you would need to see your doctor again and have a discussion as to what other options might work better. Pills cannot fix every problem.

You need to be your own best advocate. If you see a doctor and don't feel as if you are being treated well or whatever the doctor is prescribing is not working, it is up to you to change doctors. All too often when we enter a doctors office we leave our common sense in the waiting room. The doctor is "selling" you health care. Just as if you were buying a dress or a pair of jeans, you are buying her services which should make you more healthy than when you went in to her office.

Be prepared to give your doctor a complete list of symptoms and what you have done so far to help yourself. Be prepared to ask pertinent questions. If there is something you don't understand - tell your doctor by simply saying, "I do not understand what you just said, doctor. Could you please explain that to me again."

If your doctor prescribes medication, ask her what this medication is expected to do, why you should take it, what are the side effects (you could/should also ask this question of the pharmacist), and why your doctor believe this medication is important for you to take. If she doesn't give you good, sound answers tell her you do not feel comfortable with the information she's provided and could she expand on it. If you still don't feel comfortable either with her answers or her diagnoses, thank her and leave. Then call another doctor.

Let me give you an example of something that happened to me. I went to a cardiologist. His nurse took my blood pressure --- once. He walked in and started writing a prescription for blood pressure medication. I told him that I was not comfortable with taking that medication because I have never had high blood pressure, I only had my BP taken once that visit and I was in a cardiologist office which tended to make my BP rise. He got very indignant. Told me that it was up to me, that I was going to damage all my organs, etc., etc. My husband was in the office with me. When we left the office, my husband said to me, "you are going to take that medication aren't you?" My response was, "In a pig's nose! That guy is an idiot!" I called my physician and told her to give me another cardiologist.

The second cardiologist noted that my BP was up a bit but said let's go through the tests first and see what we find before we go on medication. After all the testing was done, he told me that I was in great shape and didn't need any medication for anything.

The first cardiologist really WAS an idiot and I am glad I brought my common sense along when I went into his office. I think he was more upset about the damage to his ego than he was about the damage I may do to my organs.

Good luck - QUESTION EVERYTHING!
