Can I take classes for Nurse Aid if I've been told I have Hep-B?!
Question:
Can I take classes for Nurse Aid if I've been told I have Hep-B?
A few years ago I was a regular blood donor until I received a letter from the Red Cross explaining that I had contracted hepatitus B. I never confirmed it but just stopped donating blood. Now I'm interested in becoming a nursing student and am required to get a Hep-B vaccine. Do I just give up on classes? What happens to me if I do get the vaccine?
Answers:
You must speak candidly to the director of the program you plan to enroll in. Healthcare schools have different policies regarding what documentation Hepatitis B positive students must submit, but you cannot be discriminated against because of your condition. I have had Hepatitis B+ students; they submitted a form signed by a physician stating "I recommend this patient NOT receive the Hepatitis B vaccination". Please be aware that some clinical agencies (where you will go as a student to practice on patients) may not let you practice if you do not take the Hepatitis B vaccination, regardless of the reason. But first, make an appointment to speak to the healthcare program Director. And if you have Hepatitis B, please see a physician to assure you remain in good health! And don't give up on a medical career.
