What is the longest period of time that you can have HIV or aids with no sympton!

Question:

What is the longest period of time that you can have HIV or aids with no symptons?

Answers:

Most of the other answers are on the mark. On average, it can take about 10 years for MAJOR symptoms to show up (terrible night sweats, prolonged fever, unexplained weightloss, diarrhea, etc., -- the symptomatic stage of HIV disease. However some people experience other symptoms before that. Women may experience vaginal yeast infections that appear more often and are harder to cure.

Technically, there are some people living with HIV who have never progressed to the symptomatic stage or AIDS. They are known as: elite controllers or long term non-progressors (it seems a new name for this group comes out every year).
It seems that a genetic mutation that a few people were lucky enough to be born with seems to make it harder for HIV disease to progress.

It is also important to know that some people progress from being infected with HIV to AIDS in as little as 3-4 years -- a SMALL percentage but it does happen.

So to be precise, the longest period you can be asymptomatic is not yet known as the elite controllers are still living symptom-free. The average time, though, is about 10 years.
