How serious is it to take Hydrochlorothiazide if you have a Sulpha allergy?!

Question: How serious is it to take Hydrochlorothiazide if you have a Sulpha allergy?
I've been taking Hydrochlorothiazide for high blood pressure and I have a sulpha allergy. My allergy to sulpha is quite severe. I don't have a rash or anything, but, I've been having a huge problem retaining water since I started taking this medication and I seem to have shortness of breath now that I didn't have before. Could this be because of the sulpha allergy?

Hydrochlorothiazide isn't a sulfa drug, so any side effects aren't related to your allergy. Your doctor wouldn't (hopefully) wouldn't prescribe any sulfa drug knowing that you're allergic. The things you're experiencing may be normal side effects of the medication, or it's possible that you have a separate allegy to something in hydrochlorothiazide.

Why in the world didn't you tell your doctor and pharmacist about this allergy? They can't read your mind.

Talk to your doctor and pharmacist about this and see if there are any alternatives.

Going on the internet to get medical advice is not good. No one is trained to tell you anything. We can't examine you, test you, see your medical records or run tests.

At this point, I highly suggest you go to the ER and make sure everything is ok. Then follow up with your doctor immediately. You have to tell people your medical history, your allergies, what medications you're on (over the counter, vitamins, supplements, herbs, prescription), etc. If you don't, you can wind up in serious trouble.
