Unfortunately, no one knows what causes brain cancer or most types of cancer. There are over 200 different types of cancer and probably just as many subtypes. There are very few cancers that are caused by genetics and only a few known to be caused from the environment (radiation or asbestos). We know that certain carcingens place some people at risk for cancers like smoking can lead to lung cancer. However, not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer. Thus, no one knows what causes the majority of cancers including brain tumors.
