So I'm allergic to some antibiotics, does that mean I'm allergic to al!
Question: So I'm allergic to some antibiotics, does that mean I'm allergic to all of them in the same class?
I'm allergic to Penicillin, or so I'm told from my mom, so am I allergic to all drugs in the penicillin class of antibiotics? I guess I swelled up pretty bad when I took it, so it's not really safe to just try and take it and see what happens unless I'm in a hospital with an epipen...
I'm allergic to 3 others as well, so far anyway, Ceclor, Vantin and Zithromax. As far as I know those are all in different classes as well, so am I allergic to all those classes too? I guess I don't understand how closely all antibiotics are related to each other, are they made up of the same stuff? Basically the only class I can take is sulfa antibiotics. Also, I used to take Levaquin, but I had to get it refilled 1 or 2 more times because my infection wouldn't clear up.(I used to get sinus infections and bronchitis all the time) So does that mean I'm resistant to this drug? Or did I build up a tolerance, is that possible? And does that mean all quinolones are like that for me?
I would ask my doctor but she's always so busy and seems to be in a hurry so I don't want to bother her, and when I see my allergist I always forget to ask cuz he asks me so many questions I get distracted. Anyway, I'm just curious, I'm hoping to go to vet school, so this kind of medicine stuff intrigues me :)

I will tell you who you can talk to, a pharmacist. Go to the pharmacy ask for the pharmacist. They can tell you a lot more about antibiotics than doctors usually can. And they will take more time with you, than a doctor would.
Many people are allergic to penicillin because of its over usage when it debuted.
Amoxicillin is of similar make up but can be used instead of penicillin.
