Gallbladder problems?!

Question:

Gallbladder problems?

Ok I went to the doctor with all the symptoms of gallstones or gallbladder problems. The doctor told me that I had to get a surgery but he needed to do a ultrasound. He was so sure that it was gallstones! I had the ultrasound done and he called me today and he told me that EVERYTHING IS NORMAL! no gallstones and my gallbladder looks perfect. He wants me to do a EGD, and I will but... What can it be then? I had the upper stomach pain after food, diahrrea, everything! Some ideas?

Answers:

See if your doctor will order a hida scan. This is a nuclear medicine procedure that tests how the gallbladder actually functions. This functionality is called the ejection fraction or how much bile is ejected from the gallbladder opening into the small intestine. If it is lower than 35%, I believe, the gallbladder isn't emptying well and the pain is from pressure. The location of your pain could be as little as irritation to the gastroesophageal junction (GE Junction) ulcers, gastroesophegeal reflux disease (GERD) esophegeal varicese (alcoholic) to esophegeal or stomach cancer. The best way for the doctor to see is with an EGD. This will give a direct view of the esophogus, your stomach, and the lower opening of the stomach, the pyloris. This is a frequent place for ulcers. Get the EGD and suggest the Hida Scan, Good Luck.
