I have had this condition for over 30 years. I have had success at stopping. Some antidepressant meds can help. I find imagery very useful. There is a great organization called TLC if you don't know about it already, and there are a couple of Yahoo groups you could join to get more specific suggestions.

I know it's kind of a pat answer, but I do think finding other habits to do with your hands can really work. Knitting or some other craft that is repetitive motion, or having a set of small, smooth stones that you rub between your fingers while watching TV or other triggers, reconditioning your mind to do something different can be extremely helpful.

I also found that putting my head in the shower or in the sink and putting cool to cold water on it when I'm at home can help with the stimulation that people sometimes feel in the scalp that makes it more difficult. I also have a lotion called Scalp Elixir that is available on the internet for the best price through Vitacost.com that I could put on at night that would be cool, encourage hair growth and make the hair sort of sticky helped a LOT. Some people have rubbed menthol type solutions in the scalp to cool it off.

The beautiful thing is you can get this under control, and one day you will be able to look back and either say, "Hey, remember that thing I used to do?" Or you can say, "Hey, I still do this from time to time, but it doesn't bother me and doesn't control my life anymore."

There are some support groups and healthcare practitioners that can help you as well on the TLC web site.

Best to you
