What is this??!

Question:

What is this??

My doctor told me that I suffer from an anxiety disorder due to the immense stress that I've gone through as a result of dad's death and financial problems...I've experiences fear, muscle jerks esp upon resting, headaches, throbbing head..

These things drive me crazy leading me to think, that maybe I have a brain tumor or the muscle jerks are focal seizures..I'm only 17 and thinking I"m gonna die soon is def not the best way to spend my teenage years....Can someone who either had anxiety or experienced seizures share their experience?? Thanks

Answers:

The death of a parent is one of life's biggest stresses along with divorce and losing a child. The fact that you are a still very young and dealing with these issues is very cumbersome for most people. When people are stressed, whether it be physically, emotionally, mentally, your body's response is to prepare itself for some sort of challenge. Whether it be running from a lion or preparing for the SATs, your body will pump out hormones (i.e epinephrine and norepinephrine) which raise your blood pressure, suppress your appetite, and increase your "awareness" and vigilance (i.e. "jumpy".)

That being said, all of your symptoms (headache, nervousness, anxiety, muscle twitching) can be explained by these hormones.

What to do? I would continue to see your physician. He might be able to redirect you to a social support system for you and your family to help cope with school and everything else. In addition, he may try to give you some medication (temporarily) that will help balance out your hormones.

Good luck to you:)
