Foaming at the mouth?!

Question:

Foaming at the mouth?

At driver's ed yesterday, there was a 31 year old male in the class. He said he didn't feel well and went to lay down on the couch in the back. The teacher asked if he needed to use the restroom (the couch was right outside it), he didn't say anything, and all of a sudden he started foaming yellow foam at the mouth, and then he began throwing up all over himself. The whole time he was staring straight ahead and it seemed like he almost didn't notice what he was doing. The entire time he was totally unresponsive. Until the ambulance came, he was drifting in and out of conciousness.
My question is, what could have been wrong with him? Was it some kind of disease, was he on drugs, or what? I've never heard of someone foaming at the mouth like that, especially as much as he was.

Answers:

He may have been having an epileptic seizure, in which case he is not contagious and poses no real health threat except to himself (such as biting or swallowing his tongue, contusing from falling or other injuries associated with the seizure).
