What's the point of saying "ah" at the doctors?!

Question: What's the point of saying "ah" at the doctors?
When I'm sick my doctor tells me to open my mouth and say "ah" what exactly does this tell my doctor? What happens when the "ah" all of a sudden stops without me controlling it?

Answers:

The point is to see the back of your throat. It's just a way to see if you have infections and such.

I think its because this makes sure your tongue and other mouth parts are out of the way, so he can see your throat.

I don't know what to say about the "ah" stopping. Ask your doctor, and if he doesn't listen, and gives you a hard time about not saying "ah" long enough, maybe find another doctor.
