Can you get an allergic reaction from taking Loritab?!

Question:

Can you get an allergic reaction from taking Loritab?

My baby got a little Loritab out of a medicine dropper & now he has fine tiny red bumps all over his body. Will this eventually go away or do I need to give him some medicine?

Answers:

Of course your child can be allergic to narcotics and can cause a rash. An allergy response is fairly independent of the amount consumed. If the white blood cells are exposed to the drug then that is all that is needed for a reaction. My question to you is why are you giving your baby Lortab elixir? It is very strong and can cause respiratory suppression (baby quits breathing) This medication should only be given to infants with the utmost of care. Their little bodies often over react to such drugs. More than likely Benadryl will help with the rash if it is excessive....but Benadryl also INCREASES the drowsiness and could worsen respiratory suppression in conjunction with a narcotic.. Call your pediatrician before administering anything and make sure you follow his instructions.

Unless he has really severe pain, consider something like Motrin (ibuprofen) suspension with physician approval. It works on mild to moderate pain quite well.

If the baby got into this by accident then mom.... you have to do a lot better and keep your medication out of reach of your child. This medication can cause death in infants if he had taken more and you had not gotten to him in time, this could have had a very sad ending. They do not know any better and you have to be in the mindset to protect over and above what is reasonable for yourself.

If it is enough to cause a concern not to breast feed an infant whe the mother takes the drug then you should make sure you are being closely followed when intentionally administering this drug.

This is from the manufacturer of the drug:

# Lortab passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
# If you are younger than 18 years of age or older than 60 years of age, you may be more likely to experience side effects from Lortab. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose.
