How should diabetics manage their carbs?!

Question:

How should diabetics manage their carbs?

Since learning that both of my parents are likely prediabetic or diabetic I have decided to better my own eating habits so I don't end up in the same situation. I had a disagreement with my dad yesterday about what kind of carbs to eat. I said that you should avoid things like white rice, white bread, or regular pasta and replace them with brown rice, whole grain bread, and whole grain pasta. From what I understand those replacements are more beneficial because of the higher fiber content and they are processed slower, thus resulting in less of a insulin spike/drop. He says they are just as bad and you should just avoid most carbs altogether. Who is right?

Answers:

A carb is a carb. They all are sugars. So make them count. If you are going to eat something that will raise your blood sugar make it a wise choice that counts for good for your body. Don't eat frosting, eat some strawberries. Don't eat white low-nutrient rice, eat high-nutrient brown rice. Always think of carbs as sugar, so if you choose to eat some, make them count in vitamins and fiber. Fiber does slow the sugar spike. So eat an orange don't just drink the juice. The whole orange has fiber to slow the sugar spike while the juice doesn't. Make wise choices.
