Why am I coughing so much?!

Question: Why am I coughing so much?
I have a flu but I'm getting better, it's about the 3rd day. I have a dry cough and it's driving me crazy, whenever I start coughing it's REALLY hard to stop. I've been drinking ice water and trying to distract myself but I still have the urge to cough, it's even hard to fall asleep from it. Why am I coughing so much? And is there anything I can do to at least slightly stop coughing?

Answers:

Drink room temperature water - sip a lot of it.

If this keeps up, remember that Whooping Cough is back. It's a horrible disease to get. I had it for 7 months once.... If you have a doctor, mention that to him/her. You probably don't have it - but you never know.

In the meantime, the only thing you can do is get cough syrup and down some of that. Swallow enough to "drug" your cough response. Unfortunately all good cough syrup is prescription - and they won't give it to you because they're afraid you'll turn into a craven drug addict.
