Weak skin around my nails?!

Question:

Weak skin around my nails?

Bits and strips of skin just below the cuticles keep tearing or peeling (however you can call this) a bit once in a while, at first causing minor bleeding and then staying red and hurting when in contact with water for a few days.
I believe that everything outside our body are signs of what is happening inside it. So does anyone have an idea of what this might mean? Maybe there's a shortage of some nutrients or vitamins? Does the fact that I recently (well, a few years ago) stopped eating meat can contribute, for e.g. if I don't get enough protein...?
Any clues?

Great advice so far. Thankyou.

Answers:

take vitamin E pills every day. also break them open with a toothpick and rub the oil all over your nails and skin around the nails. do this every day before bed. you should start seeing improvements in a couple days. your nails will grow quicker and stronger too!
