Help! I passed a kidney stone, why do I still feel bad?!

Question:

Help! I passed a kidney stone, why do I still feel bad?

I passed a kidney stone last night and still feel terrible, this is the second kidney stone that I have had in one month. I have increased my fluids ( like 60 oz. of water per day) and have followed the docters discharge orders, but I still am passing them? whats going on?

Answers:

Well, kidney stones do tend to be like potato chips in that respect- you seldom get just one. Whatever scenario led to them being formed in the first place was enough to make a couple. Increasing the fluid intake is flushing them down and out, which is what the general idea is. You may have also had one large stone which broke up into bits, some just larger than others. I hope you were able to catch it and can return it to the lab and doctor for analysis. Some people form stones because of dietary and enzyme troubles, and if you don't correct that you will continue to form and pass stones. Analyizing the stone can help them determine what caused it to form in the first place, and help you avoid the repeat performances. So continue to follow doctors orders and go back to see him again for a full workup. You have my sympathies, as I know they are painful- actually painful seems too mild for description. Since many stones are composed of calcium, you may have inherited a condition called hypercalciuria- where calcium is being diverted to the kidneys for removal. Too much causes the stones to form. If this is the cause, there are medications and diet changes that will help. At any rate, you will pass stones until there are no more in the system to pass. And until you find the cause of them in the first place, you stand a good chance of forming more. So get ye to the urologist, and take along the stone. Good luck, and better health.
