How much gluten does it take to damage a celiac?!

Question: How much gluten does it take to damage a celiac?
Ive been on a gluten free diet since about October 2010 and i've found it really hard to stick to but i have done my absolute best and kept to it but today i ate a cereal that had barley malt extract in it, it was a complete accident and now i'm feeling so depressed about it and feel like all that effort was worth nothing, can you tell me if barley malt extract is gluten free or not please.
Thank you.

Answers:

No it's not gluten free, but don't beat yourself up over it. We all feel tempted and sometimes eat gluten, even though we really shouldn't. Even the tiniest amount of gluten can cause damage, but your villi will repair itself every 3 days. Don't worry, just start again and do your best. There is plenty of yummy gluten free breakfast cereal you can eat. Just have a look at your supermarket =]

Hi
Please don't beat yourself up over this- virtually every coeliac in the world will eat some wheat product at some time or another- most products are so poorly labelled it needs a nutritionist to work it out (take crisps for example-it makes no sense that you can eat ready salted but not salt and vinegar!).

Barley Malt extract does contain gluten but in such small quantities that you would have to be exceptionally intolerant for it to have any affect- the general advice would be keep an eye on things for the next 48 hours- if no symptoms appear you can consider that cereal to be safe.

You shouldn't really worry either about accidentally eating anything with Gluten in- for most coeliacs any symptoms which re-occur after eating gluten usually clear up as soon as you get back on the gluten free diet.

Well done for sticking to the diet so far- it will be worth it!

Barley malt extract is not gluten free and even the smallest amount of gluten is harmful to a coeliac and the damage can take years to heal. Apparently, it can take up to two years for all gluten to be gone from your body. Don't be despondent, just get on with not eating things you know you can't. Every once in a while you are likely to fall off the wagon just make sure its not too often.
