I am 55, 6'0" and weigh 360lbs and my BP (and cholesterol) are perfect. My job takes me out on the road, so my diet is as junk food as it can get. At home, all I do is sit around watching TV or doing something on the computer - I get little or no exercise.

I'm not bragging, I only mentioned it to you so you'll have something to compare your lifestyle to mine.

By definition, I should be the poster child for heart problems. But I know how to maintain my blood pressure and cholesterol. It may come as a complete surprise to you, but all I do that's different from you is I drink lots of water and (GHADS! Don't mention this to a doctor...) I eat plenty of salt.

You see, high blood pressure isn't caused by what you eat or how much you weigh (although you do get a little stressed with too much tonnage - but look at me. I've got you by over a hundred pounds and I'm in better shape - cardio speaking). High blood pressure is caused by what you drink.

Soft drinks, coffee and others that contain sugar, caffeine and other additives alter the nutritional value and change these drinks into diuretics that pull out as much as 50% more water than they contain. This results in dehydration - the single most cause of health problems.

Add to this the water lost through respiration and kidney function and we're talking about a lot of water going out that isn't being replaced. Your body is made up of about 75% water and salt, and it must be maintained at this level. Even a -3% difference can mean serious health problems.

Eat healthier. Drink more water. NO fatty foods. LOW salt intake. Stay active.
