Answers:

All diagnostic imaging can be limiting, which is why they will sometimes use all of them to try and get a better idea what is going on. For abdominal issues they usually will use a CT and sometimes will use it for comparison with an MRI or a PET scan. However, my son has abdominal cancer and the CT and MRI could not verify a 4cm tumor in the pelvic region. It took a PET scan and an endoscopic ultrasound before it was identified. So, you cannot rely totally on diagnostic imaging, they are only tools.

Another thing we discovered with the diagnostic imaging is that often there is more disease present than the CT or MRI or PET will show. There is no way of really knowing what is happening internally unless you have surgery and they can assess the situation. That is why people are sometimes shocked after surgery to discover that their cancer is more advanced than what the CT, MRI, or PET indicated. Not sure if the medical profession will ever admit that though.
