What are the after effects of prednisone once you are no longer taking it?!

Question:

What are the after effects of prednisone once you are no longer taking it?

I have a son-in-law that is no longer on prednisone but ever since he has quit taking it he has had several health issues. They include headaches, shortness of breath, numbness in his legs. He has even thought he was having a heart attack. Currently he is wearing a heart monitor 24/7. Doctors say all could be stress-related, maybe from his job. Some say that it could come from his no longer taking prednisone for his apropecia. Most symptoms started after his stoppage in the prednisone. i am most concerned as he is only 30 years of age and that another son-in-law was just diagnosed with MS, upon having many of the same symptoms as my first son-in-law.

Answers:

Part of the answer has to do with how long he was on it. Some people only take it for a week or do a "burst". There shouldn't be to many after effects then. But if he took it longer - and especially if he had side effects while taking it (restlessness, hunger, etc...) - he could definitely have some withdrawal after. Especially if he went cold turkey instead of tapering off. I myself experienced hallucinations, panic attacks and headaches the first time I went off prednisone. It is a very good drug with some very bad effects. They say that you need to tell dentists and surgeon's for a year after that you had taken prednisone because some of the effects (like blood thinning) can stick with you. Just be sure that the doctors monitoring his heart also know he was on pred. Good luck!
