Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever is a viral disease with mortality rates as high as 90% that is caused by one of four species of Ebolavirus, Ebola Zaire, Ebola Sudan, Ebola Cote de Ivore, and Ebola Bundybigo. (The closely related Marburgvirus causes similar symptoms in the form of Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever) It causes profuse hemorrhage by critically impairing the liver's ability to produce clotting factors, and by causing the cells that line the blood vessels to loosen and form gaps, essentially making the blood vessels into leaky pipes. The virus also attacks the spleen, and causes the lining of the digestive system to be expelled along with considerable quantities of bloody diarrhea and vomit. Patients can sweat blood, and hiccuping can develop in the later stages. Headaches and backaches are usually the initial symptoms. There is no available treatment or vaccine. Thankfully, it is restricted to Africa, and has killed fewer than 1,000 people since its discovery in 1976 in a schoolteacher in Yambino Zaire.
