Is my Blood Sugar too high?!

Question: Is my Blood Sugar too high?
I'm a 27 y/o male, 5'5' weighing about 130 lbs, that exercises once or twice a week and is relatively healthy (slim, drinks only water, never eats candy, hasn't been sick in the past two or so years).

For the past couple of years I've found that I needed to go use the restroom more often than usual, but wrote it off as drinking too much water all the time.

Recently my hands and feet started getting this strange swelling/itchy/tingling feeling in the evenings and at night (they didn't actually swell, they just felt that way). So I started looking around on the Internet to see what might be causing it.

When it looked like Diabetes might be a possible cause (some of my relatives have had it, tho no one in my immediate family), I decided to go get a glucose meter to test over a period of two days.

My fasting levels in the mornings seemed to be pretty good ~ 80mg/dl before breakfast on both days, and 109mg/dl and 111mg/dl two hours after breakfast.

It was my readings in the evening AFTER dinner, though, that got me worried. I had a reading of 141mg/dl on the first day, and 136 mg/dl on the second day, 2-3 hours after dinner each.

Are these readings too high? I've read that normal levels should be below 140mg/dl, and it really got me wondering.

Also (in case this might be related) I've traditionally only eaten two very large meals a day, as opposed to eating 3-5 meals throughout the day. I like to eat cereals for the most part, yogurt, and microwave foods like burrito's and lean pockets (I do occasionally indulge in pastries and chocolate, though only once or twice every couple of weeks). For a while I was drinking blended fruit/vegetable drinks in the morning, but I stopped several weeks before I did the blood testing. I've started breaking up my meals and taking walks every evening just in case, but I'm wondering if I'm worrying over nothing.

Thanks a lot to anyone with advice or insight, I'm considering testing my blood some more and maybe even going to the Doctor in the next week or so just in case.

I am a Type 2 diabetic and have been since Dec. 2004. After reading your symptoms and your glucose readings, I feel I need to warn you to watch what you eat. Especially with the family history. It looks like you're bordering on "Pre-Diabetes."

For your age and height, you are at a pretty good weight, but if you do not want to continue your journey across the bridge you're on all the way to Diabetes, you need to work on your diet a little more. It is good that you drink plenty of water, however, the processed foods (microwave burritos), the pastries, the chocolate all contributes to higher blood sugar levels. More vegetables and fruits need to be included in your diet and when you do your shopping look at the carb count, not the sugar count (the body processes carbs like sugar so the sugar grams are already calculated into the total carb count on the nutrition labels.) A regular 12 oz soda has about 40 carbs, so you can kind of use that as a guide - a 12 oz serving of anything you eat/drink should be far fewer than 40 carbs. That soda is just one item which is 40 carbs... See if you can keep an entire meal under 50-60 carbs, (drinks included) and eat 3 daily meals like that. 150-180 daily carbs can be challenging but it can be done. Keep checking your blood sugars as you do this like you were: Before your first meal, 2-3 hours after each meal, and if you need any further help or advice, I'd be happy to help. Its perfectly normal.. Your fasting blood sugar is below 120 which is excellent and your random blood sugar is below 140 which is very normal.. it can go upto 180 mg/dl . Who said you are diabetic?

No point in testing after eating - it gives a false high.
Diabetes is diagnosed when your fasting numbers are over 125.

Well the obvious answer is to get a check up from your doctor and get a blood test for diabetes - especially since you do have a history of it in your family.

You should be getting a yearly physical anyways (which includes a series of blood tests). Frequent bathroom usage could also be a sign of an enlarged prostate. Something like 1 in 3 men over 30 have this problem so it's pretty common, and there are a lot of treatments as well -some don't even require drugs.

Eating smaller meals throughout the day and getting exercise is a good step regardless of what, if any, issues you may have. If anything, drop the microwaved foods. They're not very good for you, and in most cases can be easily replicated with fresh ingredients in no time. For instance, instead of a hot pocket, make a panini with lunch meat, some cheese, and pizza sauce. (and don't buy a panini machine either - you can get the same result with a Foreman Grill or even 2 pre-heated cast iron skillets placed on top of each other with a brick pushing down.)

i dont think you have anything to worry about, not with diabetes anyway, my blood sugar was 586 when i went to the Dr. and she gave me insulin right there in the ofc. before i could leave, said i should have already passed out and been in a coma, to never wake up.....the avg. reading is 85-140 so i think youre in good shape, when you eat, your blood sugar is going to rise, thats why you wait and take the reading a while after you get thru eating.
