Does swimming give you a tan....?I DON'T WANT A TAN!?!

Question:

Does swimming give you a tan....?I DON'T WANT A TAN!?

I am an Indian. I've got dark skin and I don't want it to get any darker. In fact, I consider fair skin beautiful, I am planning on going swimming today but I don't want a tan.
Does swimming give you a tan? Someone told me it's when you are exposed to the sun while swimming or soon after, that you get tanned.
Could someone tell me what exaclty happens while swimming that results in your gettin a tan?
What time of the day would be perfect if I don't want to develop a tan? Is after 5 pm ok?? What about early in the morning?6 am or so?
I'm in Hawaii...n I really don't want to miss out on anything...but this tanning thingy is preventing me from having fun.
What do I do? I'm really hesitant to swim nowadays.
Please adivise!!!

Answers:

People with dark skin rarely burn & easily tan due to sufficient levels of melanin pigment in their skin but are less susceptible to skin cancer

To be safe use a lot of sunscreen (SPF 30+, although there are stronger ones, which are generally baby sunscreens), wear a shirt and shorts over your swimmers (if you really want), wear a hat and sunnies out and stick to the shade!

Swimming during midday is worst for sunburning so stick to mid/late afternoons or early mornings around 6am (although this may be freezing!)

enjoy your holidays
