What is going on with my thyroid?!

Question: What is going on with my thyroid?
I was diagnosed with a low thyroid 3 months ago and was currently taking medication. I go in for a check up and my doctor (endocrinologist) did blood work and stated that my thyroid level is too high. However, my dry skin affects me everyday and it's the only symptom that bothers me (I also have acne). All my doctor does is take a blood sample and never asks me any questions. Should I go to another doctor? How should I treat my dry skin?

There are a many new school ideas for treatment of thyroid levels. Some of the new thoughts on it, is that doctors should treat the symptoms not the levels from thyroid level blood tests (unreliable).

My first advice is to find a doctor that includes you in the treatment. That includes talking and explaining things to you. My doctor listens to everything I have to say before she ever calls for tests or makes a decision. She always includes me in the decision making process. See list below for help finding a great doc in your area.

Next I would advise you to read a few books on the subject so you will understand what your endocrinologist is talking about and take a part in your own healing. Thyroid Power by Richard and Karilee Shames. The second is The Thyroid Solution by Ridha Arem. Both of these books will give you a handle on how testing helps but is not the end all for thyroid treatment.

Here is a link to doctors that others with thyroid disorders have found helpful. It is updated frequently. Hopefully you will find someone in your area. http://www.thyroid-info.com/topdrs/#us

I know your only dealing with dry skin at the moment but hypothyroid is no joke and the issue can grow into other things. It may stem from other issues such as adrenal fatigue or.... If you have insurance or lots of money I would see a naturopathic doctor and see if your able to track down the cause.

Our medical community is taught to diagnose and prescribe/operate, but often times there are underlying issues that cause our illness and the cause go's untreated, then develops into more serious issues later in life. I would suggest you to also educate yourself on the issue with the books recommended or others your attracted to. I don't think we live in a world any longer where you can not be responsible for your own treatment. With all the bad things happening to people from prescription side effects and botched operations it just makes sense for you to be educated and involved in the choices that are made about your body. You only get one body, mistakes are costly.

Another idea that strikes my mind is there are 2-3 different thyroid replacement hormones. Armour is the natural one made from powdered pig thyroid. You might find the dry skin would be affected by changing meds. Myself and many others had to try a few before we found what we like. The generics didn't work well for me, nor did my first choice armour. The good news is once you find the correct fit it won't change unless the med company changes the mix. If your doctor gives you any flack about trying the different meds or makes a face then find a new one.

Best of luck to you.
