1. Diverticulosis = formation of tiny pockets in the lining (inside) of the bowel. These are called diverticula. Caused by increased pressure on weakened spots in the bowel wall.
2. Diverticulitis = inflammation and infection of diverticula. If the intestinal wall is perforated, you can get peritonitis, abscesses, or obstruction.
How to avoid diverticular disease? Good eating habits (fiber, fruits and vegetables). Avoid straining with your bowel movements. Drink lots of water. Exercise.
