Do you class alcohol as a drug?!

Question: Do you class alcohol as a drug?
Answers:

Yes and no.

Yes - it's a drug that gets you drunk and can kill you.

No - it's not something that the pharmacist will give you.

No.

The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act defines a drug as a substance intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease. Alcohol does not do any of these things.

I would not classify alcohol as a drug, but i would call it an intoxicant or a depressant because it slows (or depresses) a persons reflexes and responses.

Yes.

However, there is nothing wrong with someone enjoying a glass of wine with a meal or drinking in moderation.

Red wine is a favourite of mine with red meats and white wine with poultry or fish. They each have a benefit that is good for your health. It does not mean however, that you can suddenly binge drink your way through three bottles worth at one go.

Also everyone knows that if you were to drink alcohol in excess three four times a week that this would have negative and damaging results upon the health of the person. I come from a region in Britain where Geordies do not understand that moderate drinking does not mean Friday night on the lash with 15 pints several chasers and a hangover from hell Saturday morning. With a repeat scenario on the Saturday and half of that on a Sunday.

I personally think if someone's idea of a good night out is drinking so much that you can't remember it the next day is laughable.

According to recent medical journals the biggest cost to the NHS in Britain soon will be for gastric related issues, intestinal issues, kidney and liver problems, obesity and an increase in heart disease, and that these problems will overtake the number of deaths by cancer.

So yes Alcohol is a drug. A legalised drug that we are all supposed to be aware of the dangers of excessive drinking in any environment.

Academic.

Yeah. A drug is any substance that alters the functions of the body or brain.

EDIT: To the smart-*** answerer below, fine. If we're looking for hugely specific answers, mine is the definition of a RECREATIONAL DRUG, not a medical drug. And depressants and intoxicants (like stimulants and psychoactives) are groups of drugs, not whether you call it a drug in the first place or not.

Yeth Ossifer. Here take my car keys-and take the car too-but please don't lock me up.

Since it is a drug, yes.

Yes it is. It indeed a drug.
