I have fibromyalgia and need some help?!

Question: I have fibromyalgia and need some help?
i have just recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and its frustrating because eventhough the doctors tell you the pain is not in your head the reason your is as much pain as your in is because something went wrong up there and it kinda makes you feel like you are weak. So your in this cycle of non stop pain and fatigue and ontop of me still going to school they expect me to exercize and be social to get me in a better mood, yea right so i guess i just need some sugestions of things that might make the day a tad bettr

Sorry your going through this Liz.

Keep a diary, prioritizing the most important tasks at the top, and do only what you can do, this is absolutely vital when your having a bad day. Self pacing is the key to a healthy balance.

When trying to do homework, do it when your at your best, (for me its usually early afternoon). If your having a really rough time with pain, make sure teacher know this, and they maybe able to adjust the homework you need to do.

While at school make sure you have if possible a comfortable chair (ergonomic chairs help a little) and ask if your allowed to get up and move around to stop muscle and joint stiffness. And find out if there is somewhere where you can lay down if needed, even laying down with you feet up for half an hour at lunch time might help you get through the day.

See a physiotherapist to help you with a graded exercise program designed for you, make sure they know what Fibro is.

Swimming is a low impact sport but its good for the cardiovascular system, set a limit of start with a few laps, if you feel ok, and not shaking from fatigue try another lap, but don't push past it.
Walking is also good to, if your feeling good walk for around 15-20, so 10 minutes to a certain point, then turn around and head for home, and build on it.

But if the pain is really bad, don't do it, and if you feel you must then do only half. This for swimming or walking. Be guided by a good physio too. Remember its your body you know how you feel, so don't let anyone push you.

I am not sure if you have been given any medication, which may help with the Fibro, if you haven't you could ask the doctor about medication and weigh up the pros and cons.

Keep your fluids up, especially in summer, dehydration can exacerbate the pain. Try to stick to healthy diet, and do allow yourself the occasional treat so you can be part of the social scene.

Try not to go out after school, through the week, so you can get home work done and rest, make sure you get plenty of sleep (if possible) and try to sleep in a little on the week ends, so if you have been invited out, you can go and enjoy yourself.

Make sure your friends know what fibro is, and how it affects you, and how they can be supportive of you.

Fibromyalgia network is an excellent source of information, they also have a Facebook link too.

Oh man sorry I forgot to give the link to Fibromyalgia network http://www.fmnetnews.com/

I have CFS & Fibromyalgia and have tried to work part time and study almost full time and just could not do it, so I reduce my studies to part time. Thankfully as an adult, the teacher & lectures were very supportive, I had access to a ergonomic chair, and if I needed to go home I could, although there was more than a few times I had gone to sleep in class, which is very embarrassing when I started to snore lol.
