Can I get hives from eating too many raspberries?!

Question:

Can I get hives from eating too many raspberries?

My mother keeps telling me to eat less raspberries because she claims they will give me hives. The quantity I eat them in is 6-12 oz per day (really good sale going on right now). I've never had a problem with hives before and even though I don't really believe my mom I just want to be sure. Does anyone know if its possible to get hives from eating too many raspberries?

Answers:

Raspberries are high in a chemical known as salicylic acid. Like lactose, most people have some limit on how much they can process. This tolerance threshold is variable from the point where some people can get immediate and severe reactions, to where some people might slowly feel symptoms come on after a prolonged binge (such as when a great sale is going on).

Now, tolerance levels are genetic, so if your mother is warning you against them, she might be going on some real family medical history. I like raspberries, so MY suggestion would be to avoid other foods with salicylates such as tomatoes, wine, and the other sweet fruits like strawberries, cherries, grapes, and pineapples. Remember though, some food reactions are instantaneous, and some take days or weeks, even years to fully onset. Stay aware of how your diet changes affect your sense of wellbeing and energy, and I think your body will guide you right.
