What medications can you take for a cold with a bad sore throat if you have?!

Question: What medications can you take for a cold with a bad sore throat if you have?
type 2 diabetes?

There was a nasty cold virus that went around my husbands work and he unfortunately contracted it.

I realize he should go to the doctor; but, he just got it and we haven't had a chance to get in to see him.

My husband is somewhat of a 'baby' (still love him ~ smile) with being sick and won't try to use over the counter cold medication that is for diabetics ~ specifically.

Can someone suggest what to do and give until I can get him into the doctor ....

Thanks...

Answers:

Taking tylenol or motrin regularly would be common sense for the sore throat, taking an over the counter decongestant would also help - stick with the plain stuff rather than combination drugs because they often contain tylenol and then you get too much tylenol per day. Any over the counter cough medication which states "sugar free" would also be appropriate if he is coughing. Rest, lots of water, run a humidifier in the bedroom where he sleeps and expect this to take 10-14 days to go away. If the sore throat gets worse and worse, then it would be time to see his family doctor and get a strep test done. Treating a cold at home does not necessarily require a visit to your family doctor.

Delsym is a cough medicine that is used to prevent one from coughing it will not do anything for a persons sore throat or for the cold virus in general.

There are a few things that you can do for your husband. Make sure that he is properly hydrated and make sure that he is comfortable like warm and you could always make chicken soup that helps fight the cold virus.
