Your question exposes your lack of knowledge of what cancer is. Cancer isn't just one disease - it is many. There are cures for SOME cancers, treatments for some. It is now known that something like prostate cancer can actually be one or more of 50 different varieties.

If you had cancer how much would you pay for the cure? Your reasoning about this is faulty.

The only effective and real "cure" for cancer, would be to PREVENT it from occurring in the first place. What we have now are "treatments" to effect some death of the cells which have become "cancerous". We have "chemo therapy" and "radiation" -- these two treatments are not cures but actually kill cancer cells. Once cancer cells have a chance to reproduce and invade other bodily systems - its only a matter of time before this happens. With early intervention the two treatments available will curtail the growth, but is not a guarantee of a cure!

If they found the cure for cancer they would have been EASILY able to find a cure for the common cold. If they were keeping the cancer cure away, they'd for sure use the same idea towards common colds and make money by selling the product, because there aren't any fundraisers for the common cold cure, but there are for cancer. Make sense?

There is no conspiracy to cover up a cure for cancer.

First, the problem with finding a 'cure for cancer' is that cancer is hundreds of diseases, not just one. The difficulty is that different cancers are caused by different things, so no one strategy can prevent them all, and different cancers respond to different treatments so no one treatment can cure them all. There hasn't been and never will be a Eureka! moment when a single substance or procedure is discovered that will reverse all types of cancer.

And while there isn't a guaranteed cure for any type of cancer, cancer is in fact cured every day on an individual basis. Did you know that 70% of children with cancer are cured of it? 70%! Yes, I'd rather it was 100% too - but 70% is a far cry from 'no cure'. Testicular cancer, Hodgkin's disease, and many cases of leukaemia can all be cured in adults with chemotherapy, most skin cancers are cured with surgery, and many cases of thyroid cancer and cancer of the larynx are cured with radiotherapy.

Many other types of cancer are also cured if they are found early enough. Nobody will pretend there isn't still a long way to go, but the idea that a secret cure is being hidden, presumably for reasons of profit, doesn't hold water. Think about it...

If there were a hidden cure, thousands of people would have to have been cured by it (otherwise how would they know it worked?). All those people would be keeping quiet about it - why? Where are they? Where are their testimonials? Why haven't any of them sold their stories to the media?

They can't have been killed off to ensure their silence - they'd have to live out their long healthy cancer-free lives in order to prove the cure worked. And they can't all have been bought off - trials are random, no way to ensure every participant would be greedy and unprincipled.

I don't think it would be bursting anyone's bubble to hear that drug companies are in it for the money - so why would they be keeping quiet about this cure even though it would bring them fame and fortune? Any drug company discovering a cure for even one type of cancer would make far more money than they can have dreamed of making up till now.

And doctors, scientists, researchers etc and their families develop and die from cancer at the same rate as the rest of the population. You really think they'd rather watch their kids die than reveal this secret cure?

Every medical professional in the whole world would have agreed to keep the existence of this cure secret. Every single one. One blabbermouth, one disgruntled researcher or sacked nurse and the whole conspiracy’s blown. Newspapers and other media wouldn't have got a sniff of it.

Like you, I live in the UK, where we don't pay for our medical treatment, including cancer treatment. Cancer treatment costs our government untold billions - no fortunes being made there. Yet we have the same treatments as the rest of the world - no miracle cure has been revealed in order to save money.

Existing treatments aren't perfect - very far from it. One day people will look back on them with horror. But they are all we have at the moment, and we know, because they have been tested and proven in double-blind clinical trials, that they save many lives and prolong many, many more.

Edit: Sheldon - that makes no sense at all. They're not even related. The "common cold" is a rapidly mutating virus, whereas cancer is a condition. We can vaccinate against "a cold" no problem, but then it just mutates right away. You're comparing apples to truck tires.

I think so. There's FAR too much money in cancer research and treatment. There are many who believe (and with logical science behind it), that cancer is largely a metabolic disease (meaning, with the right nutrients, it would be very difficult to get cancer, even in the presence of smoking, pesticides, etc.) Metabolic disease cures aren't profitable. (i.e. scurvy = vitamin c)

They have already come up with a pill that stops the progression and eliminates the symtoms of certain types of leukemia and stomach cancer,its called gleevec look it up.I believe this drug is the first step to finding a cure....

It wouldn't surprise me if they did. They wouldn't give it out because just think of how many people will be put out of business if there is a cure. So many people would lose their jobs if there was.
