Question: Does codeine cough syrup work right away?

Ive had a bad tickly and chesty cough for a week now ,the doctor said i had a chest infection and he gave me 2 prescriptions, 1 was codeine cough syrup which he said take first to see if it helps and the other was a course of antibiotics to get 4 days after incase the syrup didnt work. but he says he doesnt like giving out antibiotics because he doesnt think they are good when you only have a chest infection. Is Codeine syrup meant to work right away after you have taken it? as its only meant to be taken at night. ive not had a full nights sleep in a week, some nights i just didnt bother trying to go to sleep because the cough kept me awake.I'll be taking my second dose of codeine tonight, if it doesnt work tonight should i just get the antibiotics tomorrow?. Its getting me down and i really want rid of it now.

Yes, the cough syrup should work right away. It's not something that has to build up in your system or you have to take a course of, like antibiotics. I would start on the antibiotics if I were you. I hope you feel better. A respiratory tract infection (like bronchitis?) can turn into pneumonia if not treated properly.

I would get the other medicine if it doesn't work by tomorrow but normally it works really well! Just be careful it makes me really sleepy and then when I stop taking it I have trouble sleeping because I used to it making me tired.
