Is Gardnerella vaginalis an std? Docs only?!

Question: Is Gardnerella vaginalis an std? Docs only?
Hi.I tested positive for gardnerella vaginalis, but negative for trichomanas and candida.I found that I tested positive on my pelvic exam notes given to me after a laprascopy surgery. My doc didnt mention this to me AT ALL,which is odd.I looked it up and it said it can be given to your spouse thru sex?? My doc has failed to get back to me and didnt explaiin this to me while I was there so any help would be appreciated.I am on antibiotics and am recovering from surgery so lots of pain killers too,but no std symptoms and the definition says it is a bacteria in the female tract.Anyone with any info-PLEASE write back.My doc doesnt talk much.....

Answers:

im not a doctor, but i can clearly see your not getting any straight forward answers.

Gardnerella Vaginalis is an infection of the female genital tract by bacteria of the Gardnerella vaginalis strain, often in combination with various anaerobic bacteria. Also called bacterial vaginosis.

It is not clear whether bacterial vaginosis is sexually transmitted (as you mentioned) but it can be associated with other sexually transmitted diseases. It is more common in women with multiple sexual partners and it often develops soon after intercourse with a new partner. Bacterial vaginosis is relatively common among women with female partners, where the condition may be triggered by the insertion of fingers or shared sex toys.

There is no condition equivalent to bacterial vaginosis in men. Bacterial vaginosis can occur in monogamous relationships, and it can occur even when the woman’s partners always use condoms.

So, it seems that a sexual partner doesn’t "give" a woman bacterial vaginosis, but it occurs as a result of sexual contact.

Who is cheating that you have an STD? You or the hubby?
