Asthma question?

so today we had to do a search and rescue (practice), in the camp I'm working in, and I have asthma. and we just kept having to dive and search continuosly in a swmapy lake, and I didnt want to say I couldnt do it or that I have asthma because the job is intense and they would say we could get another lifegaurd, but I felt like I was going to go under because I was so out of breath, and when I got out my chest felt really tight and it still hurts to take a deep breath. I already overdosed (5 puffs) on my albuterol inhaler. Any advice? its hard to take a deep breath

langoori, first of all thanks for the advice. yea my dream is to be a doctor, my dad's a dentist and i am in his office a lot, i could have his amazing practice if i want but it doesnt intrest me, and eyes are the only thing that grosses me out, so i guess my intrests in medicine is very diffrent from your, but yea its going to be a lot of work, hard work but i believe it will all be worth it in the end. I am intrested in emergency medicine, but not sure becuase no connection with patient, but than I am not on call, so maybe, I was also thinking of a pediatric speciality such as a pediatric cardiovasuclar surgeon or pediatric pulminolgist (from all my knowledge and personal experience of respiratory diseases). My bro's in med school and hes probally going into ob-gyn, but its not for me. I still have plenty of time to decide my specialty. Thanks again and good luck.

i have asthma too and yeah this happens to me ALL the time. do you have a sharp pain in your chest every time you take a deep breath? if so, sit upright and start out with small breaths and gradually breath deeper. it helps. the albuterol inhaler works too, but not as well. use the emergency (white one) albuterol inhaler if the breathing thing i told you to do doesn't work. don't overdose the inhaler because then it won't work as well. take two puffs max if you need it.
