What is social anxiety disorder?!

Question: What is social anxiety disorder?
Is it like an actual disorder? Is it where you turn red when you talk to people or sweat or shake. Can you please explain in details? I turn red, shake, and my hands get sweaty when i meet new people or speak in front of crowds, or even just raise my hand; but is it a disorder?

Answers:

Yes, it is in a way psychological issue / mental block due to which one suffers from anticipatory anxiety before any social situation/event (involving one person or many people). A person with social anxiety may become nervous, worried, paniky and may feel voice going weak, racing heart, tension in muscles, shaky hands, stomach problems like nausea, diarrhea, other problems like yawning/dizziness (some more depending on an individual).

You are asking here about social anxiety which is just one of the many types of anxieties. In general, difference between fear and anxiety is that fear is what we feel when we encounter bear in the woods, sit through turbulence on an airplane, or hear a strange noise late at night when I am alone. Anxiety, on the other hand, is what we experience when we think about possibly encountering a bear in the woods, anticipate air turbulence on an upcoming flight, or worry about being alone at night.

3.The positive power of negative thinking: using defensive pessimism to manage your anxiety and perform at your peak (Norem, Julie K.)

All the best!
